When the ICC explained how its new Super 7 seeding works, it used Bangladesh as the example: if Bangladesh qualify and Sri Lanka do not, Bangladesh take slot B3 and play Australia at the Wanderers on 25 October. That is exactly the scenario Bangladesh are chasing.
They qualified directly on the ODI rankings but, like Afghanistan, without a Super 7 seed. Here is their group, the game that decides most, and the route that opens up if they get through.
Bangladesh at a glance
- Group B: New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Qualifier B
- First match: Friday 8 October v England at the Namibia Cricket Ground, Windhoek
- Super 7 seed: none. They need to displace a seeded team
- Best World Cup finish: quarter-finals (2015)
Group stage
Bangladesh open in Windhoek against England, then cross to the Eastern Cape for New Zealand in KuGompo City. The middle of the group is two games in Durban in four days: Sri Lanka on 16 October and the hosts on 19 October. They finish against Qualifier B at SuperSport Park on 23 October, the last Group B match.
The game that matters most
Sri Lanka in Durban. Group B's seeds are New Zealand (B1), South Africa (B2), Sri Lanka (B3) and England (AB4), and the most direct route for Bangladesh is to finish above Sri Lanka and take B3. Beat them on 16 October and the B3 race is open.
If Bangladesh do take B3, these are their Super 7 games:
Semi-finals and the final
The semi-finals are at Newlands on 17 November and SuperSport Park on 18 November, each with a reserve day. The final is at the Wanderers on 21 November.
Bangladesh's venue guide
Namibia Cricket Ground, Windhoek
England on 8 October to open.
KuGompo City
New Zealand on 12 October, on the Eastern Cape coast.
Durban
Sri Lanka and South Africa, two games in four days. If Bangladesh take B3, they would return to Durban to face India on 14 November.
SuperSport Park, Tshwane (Centurion)
Qualifier B to close the group, possibly with a Super 7 place riding on it.
Can Bangladesh do it?
Bangladesh have a record of World Cup upsets: they beat India and South Africa in 2007, and England in 2015 on the way to the quarter-finals. The 2027 format rewards exactly that kind of result. One win over a seed in the group can change their whole tournament.
