Pakistan's 2027 World Cup turns on a two-day gap. They open against Afghanistan at SuperSport Park on Friday 8 October and play India at the Wanderers on Sunday 10 October. India, by contrast, get three days after their own opener.
And it may not be the only India game. Pakistan are pre-seeded A3 for the Super 7, India are A1, and A1 plays A3 at Newlands on 7 November. Here is the full route, venue by venue.
Pakistan at a glance
- Group A: India, Australia, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Qualifier A
- First match: Friday 8 October v Afghanistan at SuperSport Park, Tshwane
- India v Pakistan: Sunday 10 October at the Wanderers, Johannesburg
- Super 7 slot: A3, if they qualify
- World Cup title: 1992. Runners-up: 1999
Group stage: a highveld fortnight
Four of Pakistan's five group games are on the highveld: Tshwane, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Harare. The fifth is in Paarl. None is on the coast. The opener carries real risk, too: Afghanistan beat Pakistan at the 2023 World Cup in Chennai.
Pakistan also have history at the opening venue. Their 2003 World Cup defeat to India, the game of Sachin Tendulkar's 98, was played at Centurion, home of SuperSport Park. They went out in the first round of that tournament.
If Pakistan reach the Super 7: the A3 path
The A3 path starts on the coast, against New Zealand in Gqeberha on 26 October, then goes to Victoria Falls for England and Durban for South Africa. The fourth game is the one circled in two countries: India at Newlands on Sunday 7 November. Pakistan then finish with two games in Bloemfontein, Sri Lanka on 10 November and Australia on 13 November.
Semi-finals and the final
The top four go through, first against fourth and second against third. The semi-finals are at Newlands on 17 November and SuperSport Park on 18 November, each with a reserve day. The final is at the Wanderers on 21 November.
Pakistan's venue guide
SuperSport Park, Tshwane (Centurion)
Afghanistan on 8 October to open, and the venue of the second semi-final.
Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
India on 10 October. South Africa's biggest ground, high on the highveld, and the venue for the final.
Bloemfontein
Qualifier A in the group, then Sri Lanka and Australia back to back at the end of the A3 path. If Pakistan qualify, no venue sees them more often.
Harare and Paarl
Zimbabwe at home in Harare on 19 October, then Australia in Paarl on 22 October to close the group.
Gqeberha, Victoria Falls, Durban and Cape Town
The Super 7 stops, including India at Newlands, the coastal ground below Table Mountain.
Can Pakistan win it?
Pakistan are 1992 champions and 1999 runners-up, and the format suits a side that improves through a tournament: the Super 7 wipes the slate, so a scrappy group stage costs nothing once they are through. The draw is demanding early, with Afghanistan and India inside three days, and the group never goes near the coast, while half the Super 7 does. That shift in conditions is the thing to plan around.
