Five BBL clubs start the season with a new head coach, and two have not told anyone who will toss the coin. Moises Henriques retired from the Sixers, and the Heat are yet to decide whether Usman Khawaja continues. Fantasy managers should separate the two jobs: the club captain is whoever walks out for the toss, while your fantasy captain is simply the player most likely to double your points.
How to Choose a Fantasy Captain in the BBL
Your captain scores 2x and your vice-captain 1.5x, and changing either is free before any match. So the choice is made fresh every game, not once. Three filters work well: pick a player who faces the most balls or bowls four overs, prefer a player who does both, and lean towards the home side at grounds it knows.
The Openers
David Warner is the standout. Warner made 433 runs at 86.60 with a strike rate of 154 last season, finishing with 110 not out, 82, 67 not out and 130 not out. Matt Short and Finn Allen fit the same profile with more risk. Allen hit 33 sixes in the first nine games of BBL|15, more than anyone, at a strike rate of 189.55.
The All-Rounders
Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Ben Stokes can score in both innings. Maxwell has 3,317 runs and 47 wickets in the BBL. Stoinis has 3,250 and 59. Stokes costs 10.5 Cr and has played only four BBL games, all more than a decade ago, so give Stokes a few games before trusting the armband every night.
The Bowlers
Bowler captains are the differential. Sean Abbott has 186 BBL wickets, the record, and bowls the overs where wickets fall. Spencer Johnson has 41 wickets at 19.22 and Jhye Richardson 113 at 20.91. In a league where most managers captain a top-order bat, one three-wicket night from your bowler jumps a lot of rivals.
Double-header days are the easiest captain gain of the season. Each match has its own lock, so after the early game you can move the armband to a player in the late game.
