BBL Fantasy 2026/27: Season Fantasy Guide, Rules & Best Picks

BBL fantasy guide 2026/27: how Season Fantasy works, 100 Cr budget, 150 transfers, who misses games for Test duty, best picks and a sample XI.

BBL|16 is not a normal Big Bash for fantasy players. Australia's Test squad will be tied up with New Zealand until 8 January and then flies straight to India, so most of the country's all-format stars will miss most of the season. New signings like Ben Stokes, Finn Allen, Trent Boult and Jonny Bairstow carry far more of the load, and a designated batter rule arrives for the first time. Managers who read that early will be ahead before the first ball in Chennai on 12 December.

What Is BBL Season Fantasy?

BBL Season Fantasy is CricketDream's free game for the whole tournament. You pick one squad of 11 from the eight clubs and keep it from the first match to the final, making changes with a pool of 150 transfers. Your team is frozen at each match start, so points are counted for whichever players you held at that lock. The site is free to play, with no entry fee and no prize money, and you compete on the global leaderboard and in private leagues with friends.

Decision 1: Who Actually Plays?

Cricket Australia reported when the schedule came out that the country's all-format stars are unlikely to feature in the BBL this summer. The four-Test series against New Zealand runs to 8 January in Sydney, and the Test squad leaves for India straight after. Alex Carey is the clearest example: the same reporting says the Test schedule will keep Carey away from Adelaide. Steve Smith is contracted to the Sixers but sits in the same position if named for the Tests. Selectors have not named those squads yet, so check before you commit.

Several big names on last season's lists are not in the pool at all. Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Nathan Lyon and Chris Lynn were all uncontracted on Cricket Australia's tracker and no club has announced them. If any of them signs, CricketDream adds them, and a transfer is all it costs to bring them in.

💡

The simplest rule for your first team: pay for players whose clubs have confirmed them for the whole season. Boult and Lockie Ferguson are locked in for all of BBL|16 including finals. Bairstow and Michael Bracewell are also signed for the full season.

Decision 2: Spend the 100 Cr Where Runs and Wickets Overlap

Prices run from 7 Cr to 10.5 Cr, and most of the pool sits at 8 Cr. An XI of 8 Cr players costs 88, which leaves 12 Cr to upgrade. That is about five premium players, not eleven. The sensible spend is on players who earn in more than one way, then fill the rest from the 8 Cr band, which is full of real BBL performers. Sean Abbott, the leading wicket-taker in the competition's history, costs 8 Cr. Lloyd Pope has 62 wickets at 22.16 for 8 Cr.

Decision 3: Use the Batter Slots for Players Who Bowl

You must pick at least three batters, and role labels decide who can fill those slots. Mitchell Owen (9.5 Cr) and Cooper Connolly (8.5 Cr) are listed as batters and both bowl: Connolly has 27 BBL wickets at 18.26 with an economy of 6.85, and Owen has 10. Mitch Marsh is also a batter in the game with 25 BBL wickets. Any wicket they take is a bonus you would not get from a pure opener in the same slot.

Decision 4: Pick the Keeper Who Bats in the Top Four

Keepers score for catches and stumpings on top of runs, so the position rewards a top-order bat. Sam Harper (8.5 Cr) was the BBL|15 Player of the Tournament with 381 runs and 14 dismissals. Josh Philippe (8.5 Cr) has 110 career dismissals, the most in the competition. Shai Hope (9.5 Cr) and Jonny Bairstow (9 Cr) are the premium options, and Bairstow fills the top-order hole Tim Seifert left at the Renegades. Avoid Carey for now for the Test reason above.

Decision 5: Plan the Designated Batter Rule

From the Chennai opener, a team can name one designated batter who bats but does not field or bowl, plus a designated fielder who may keep wicket but cannot bowl. They swap at the change of innings. It is optional, it applies to the men only, and the nomination is made before the bat flip. For fantasy, this makes the final team sheet matter more: a veteran batter used this way gives up catches, and a specialist fielder can earn catch points without facing a ball.

The over-rate rule also changed. Bowling sides have 84 minutes for their 20 overs, and if the timer expires, full Powerplay conditions apply from the next ball. Cricket Australia noted this already happened in the last four balls of the Heat's 258-run chase. Expect slightly more runs late in innings when a team falls behind.

Decision 6: How to Spend 150 Transfers

150 transfers over 44 matches is about 3.4 per game, far more than most managers need. The best use is rotation around match days: every club plays 10 league games, and there are six double-headers (26 December, 1, 4, 10, 16 and 17 January) when two matches run on one day. Use transfers to load up on clubs playing soon, and keep some for the finals, when only four clubs are left and every manager wants the same players.

  • Before Chennai: only Renegades and Scorchers play on 12 December, then nothing until 15 December, so a heavy Scorchers or Renegades tilt is a cheap head start.
  • Mid-season: check Tom Curran, who misses the Heat's first three games for family reasons. Bevon Jacobs covers those games.
  • Around 8 January: watch for any national players released or called up, and for overseas replacement signings.
  • Finals: Qualifier 19 January, Knockout 20 January, Challenger 23 January, Final 26 January.

A Sample XI Under 100 Cr

This team costs 100 Cr and meets every role minimum. It is a starting point built on players with confirmed clubs, not a prediction. Prices are live Season Fantasy prices on 30 October 2026.
