For the first time, Usman Khawaja has a whole Big Bash season ahead with no Test tour in the way. Khawaja retired from international cricket after the Sydney Ashes Test in January, re-signed with the Heat at 39, and at 8 Cr may be one of the best prices in the game.
Khawaja's average of 33.43 from 73 innings came around Test tours, in what Khawaja called a few games here or there. The new deal changes that. Former Heat coach Johan Botha named Khawaja as a prime candidate for the designated batter role, which would keep a 39-year-old fresh without costing the team a fielder. The Heat have not yet named a captain under new coach James Hopes.
