BBL stands for Big Bash League. It is Australia's men's T20 franchise league, run by Cricket Australia. It started in 2011-12 and is played over the Australian summer, from December to January. BBL 2026/27 is the sixteenth season, known as BBL|16.

How the Season Works

44 matches in total: 40 in the league stage and four finals.
Each club plays 10 league games.
The top four reach the finals: Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger and Final.
The final of BBL 2026/27 is on 26 January 2027.

In the Qualifier, first plays second and the winner goes straight to the Final. Third plays fourth in the Knockout. The Qualifier loser and Knockout winner then meet in the Challenger for the last place.

Rules That Make It Different

Power Surge: a two-over period of fielding restrictions, on top of a four-over Powerplay.
Designated batter: new in BBL|16, one player can bat without fielding, with a designated fielder taking over.
Over-rate penalty: 84 minutes for 20 overs, then full Powerplay restrictions.

Is There a BBL Draft in 2026/27?

No. The international player draft has been removed, so clubs now sign overseas players directly. Clubs can have up to three overseas players on the primary list.

Why Indian Fans Should Care

The BBL|16 opener is in Chennai on 12 December, the first BBL match outside Australia. Most games start in the Indian afternoon, and the league has stars such as Ben Stokes, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell on its lists.
