"Heather was a no-brainer for us," Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said. "Her leadership, experience, and ability to adapt to whatever the team needs makes her incredibly important to this group. She's also a real enabler for players like Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll and Laura Harris, being able to provide an expertise that other teams don't have access to."
Copeland added a detail that says as much as any statistic: "When Heather announced her international retirement, she messaged me straight away to reaffirm her commitment to the Thunder, which says a lot about how much this club means to her."
Elsewhere on the list, Thunder chose not to activate the third-year option in Sri Lanka star Chamari Athapaththu's contract, freeing up their eighth spot. That spot went to keeper-batter Tahlia Wilson, a travelling reserve with Australia's T20 World Cup-winning squad this year, fending off a rival push from the Sixers to sign her.
